Focus on Housing

Housing in Vermont has been at crisis levels for many years now. Brattleboro has one of the lowest vacancy rates in the country, and our wages don't come close to the more than $20 per hour needed for market rate housing.

Given the dire situation, it was heartening to spend this last weekend diving deeply into the issue: attending the opening of Great River Terrace (a shining star of community-oriented, low-barrier, supportive housing), MC-ing the Community Vision Stage at Tiny House Fest Vermont (a gathering of people thinking and building innovative new frames of what house and home mean), and in the midst of all this hustle and bustle, knocking on doors all up and down Western Avenue, where I talked to people who live in converted barns, attics, single family houses, and new construction… so many powerful conversations about government subsidy, low wages, and neighbors!
